Prime Minister Calls for Vigilance Against Illegal Imports and Expanding Exports

Phnom Penh: Prime Minister Hun Manet of Cambodia has issued clear directives to the Ministry of Commerce, emphasizing the need to boost Cambodian product exports to international markets while simultaneously preventing the influx of illegal, damaged, or substandard goods.

During a crucial meeting held on December 22, 2023, the Prime Minister instructed the Ministry of Commerce and relevant ministries to work collaboratively in maintaining trade agreements with friendly countries, ensuring the continued flow of commerce between Cambodia and its international partners.

Prime Minister Hun Manet also stressed the importance of ministers accompanying him on foreign trips to leverage these opportunities for fostering trade ties with international partners and attracting commerce into Cambodia.

Furthermore, he urged the Ministry of Commerce to persistently promote the production and consumption of locally-made products. This promotion would be achieved through high-profile exhibitions showcasing domestic products, with the aim of reducing the importation of foreign goods.

In parallel, the Prime Minister called upon the Ministry of Commerce to enhance governance and private sector development. He emphasized the importance of establishing strategic standards for managing trade associations and private enterprises. Additionally, he underscored the need for strengthening domestic and international trade management by enhancing and enacting laws, regulations, and codes of conduct related to corporate governance of private companies and enterprises, competition, consumer protection, and food safety. These measures are essential for safeguarding consumer health, safety, and overall well-being.

The Prime Minister delivered these directives during the "Closing the Meeting to Summarize the Results of Trade in 2023 and Work Direction in 2024," held at the Ministry of Commerce on the afternoon of December 22, 2023.
